Is there a Notepad++ online? Ways to use it in a browser

You are on a work laptop, a Chromebook or someone else's computer, and you want Notepad++. Searching for "Notepad++ online" turns up plenty of sites using the name, which raises the obvious question: is there an official browser version?

The short answer is no. Notepad++ is a free, open-source text and code editor for Windows, and its developers do not offer a web version. Sites calling themselves "Notepad++ online" are not affiliated with the project. Some are perfectly useful editors; they are just not Notepad++.

What you can do is work out which part of Notepad++ you actually need right now, because a browser editor covers some of it well and some of it not at all.

What people usually mean by "Notepad++ online"

Most searches come from one of two situations:

• Quick plain-text work. Open a config file, tidy a list, paste a log and read it with line numbers, save a .txt. Windows' own Notepad would do, except you are not on Windows or cannot install anything.
• Real code editing. Syntax highlighting, several files open in tabs, regex search and replace, macros, plugins. That is what makes Notepad++ Notepad++.

The first is easy to do in a browser. The second is where you should be honest with yourself about the tool.

How to edit a text or code file in your browser

1. Open the notepad Go to notedraft.com. It works in any modern browser, including on a Chromebook or a Mac.
2. Open your file Press Open next to New note (or Ctrl+O), or drag the file onto the page. A .txt or .md opens as ordinary text; code and data files such as .js, .html, .css, .py, .json, .csv and .log open in a code block, with every space and tab kept.
3. Edit Line numbers run down the left of the code block. Tab and Shift+Tab indent and outdent. When the cursor is in the block, the toolbar shows which language it is highlighted as; change it there.
4. Save it The note saves itself in your browser. To get a file, press Download at the top and choose Plain Text, Markdown or PDF.

When to install Notepad++ instead

If you edit code for hours, rely on regex replace across files, or have plugins you depend on, a browser editor will slow you down. On Windows, install Notepad++ from its official site. On a Mac or Linux machine, a dedicated code editor gives you the same class of features.

For a quick edit on a machine where you cannot or would rather not install anything, a browser editor is the faster route. Both are good tools; they are aimed at different jobs.
